Setup and support for Puente on iPhone and iPad.
Start your first conversation
- Open Puente and enter your own OpenAI API key.
- Read the privacy information, enable the data-sharing agreement, and choose Connect & continue. A short service test checks your account’s access.
- Tap Start conversation and allow microphone access.
- Speak English or Spanish, then pause briefly. Puente displays the transcript and translation and speaks the translated language.
- Speak again to interrupt playback, or tap Stop to finish.
Requires iOS 17 or later, internet access, and an OpenAI API account with available credit and access to the required models. The app is free; OpenAI API charges are separate.
Common questions
Will my ChatGPT subscription cover this?
No. Puente uses the OpenAI API, which is billed separately to your API account. Keep your API key private and monitor usage in your OpenAI account.
Why does the key check fail?
Check that your key is current, its project has credit, and its permissions allow transcription, translation, and speech generation. Puente shows a specific message for insufficient credit, missing access, or connection problems.
How do I improve interruptions or reduce echoes?
Use a quiet room and moderate speaker volume. In Puente Settings, move Microphone sensitivity toward Noisier rooms if speaker audio triggers another translation. Headphones can help in loud or echoing spaces.
What if microphone access is off?
Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable Puente. Return to the app and tap Start again. After a call or audio route change, you may need to tap Start again.
Does it work offline or in the background?
No. Translation and AI speech require OpenAI and an internet connection. Listening stops when Puente enters the background.
How do I clear data or disconnect?
Use Clear conversation to erase the displayed history. In Settings, Remove API key disconnects your account and clears the conversation. To invalidate the key everywhere, revoke it in your OpenAI account. See our privacy policy.
Can I rely on every translation?
AI may mistranscribe speech or translate it incorrectly. Check important details with the other person and use a qualified interpreter when accuracy is critical.
